Should I pay for an excursion on my cruise to Nassau and Freeport or just take a taxi to the beach?

I have three children who just want to go to the beach and maybe snorkeling. Should I pay $45 to $60 per person for an excursion or just take a taxi to the beach? We've never been to the Bahamas before.
