Question:

Should I pay for parking or should my employer pay?

I have worked in the same company for over 6 years. We have always been able to park for free on the road outside, however the council have put parking meters up on the road. It will now cost £3 a day, £60 a month etc... as this is a change in circumstances should I be expected to cover this cost or should my employer? As essentially I would now be paying for the pleasure of coming to work. I know if a business moves location often employees are given a raise to cover the extra mileage on their journey. Does anyone know where I stand legally on this matter so I can raise it with my employer? Thanks!

  1. not your employers fault really - ask for a pay rise

  2. Answer is simple, leave your car at home. Why on earth do you think your employer should pay your parking fee ? Take it a step further and ask him to pay your increase in petrol bills as a result of world oil prices.

  3. If it's a public road, there's no reason your employer should pay. If it were a private car park then it'd be different, but it's not your employer's decision to charge, and they're not gaining anything from it.

I know it's a very American idea, but could you car share? It would split the price of parking. Failing that, ask your employer for an employees' car park, or park somewhere else and walk to work.

  4. you dont have a chance..the boss pays u to WORK not park...but try him/her  if you dont ask,,,,you dont know...go 4 it

  5. while you probably wont ever get anything from your bosses on this (short of quitting then getting re-hired at a new rate) here are a couple points you could take up with them.

-your company should provide you with parking. they chose a location with no parking - likely to save money (either on rent or proximity concerns).  now you are the one paying for their choice, which isn't really how that relationship should work.

-if you were hired today by this company parking costs would be a consideration in what salary you would accept for the job - in that regard they will be paying for parking for all future employees. why not you, their loyal employee?

    - to the gent above, they do pay for petro increase - that would be one of the purposes of a COLA (cost of living allowance) increase.
