Question:

Should I pay more if someone has a crash in my car?

I have a policy for my car. My boyfriend took out a temporary insurance policy on the car so he could drive it for a day, and another driver hit him whilst stationary at traffic lights.

He was on a different policy, and I was not involved at all, however insurers are now increasing my premium, and it has been added to the "claims and underwriting exchange" so everyone is charging me more.

Is there any reason I should see an increase in premium, when it was not my policy, and I was not driving, but it happened in a car registered in my name?

  1. No, your policy should not increase since you're not the driver.  Your premium should only increase if you hit another vehicle, property, person, animal, etc.

If your insurer increased your premium because of this, go and look for another company.  There are a lot of insurance companies out there that will take you.  But also be sure that your premium didn't go up because of previous ticket(s) or accident(s) prior to this incident.

  2. Well for a start, it's illegal to have two different specific insurance policies covering one vehicle, so I assume you mean that you added him as a named driver on yours, in which case it's a fair cop.

If he wrongly took out insurance on your car & didn't tell his insurer that it was already covered by your policy, they will quite rightly penalise the pair of you.

    Sorry.

  3. doesn't matter if your boyfriend had 'another policy' on the car-it still is YOUR responsibility for the vehicle-and you let someone else drive it - so now the insurance company keeps that in mind...that you let other people drive the car, so they'll charge you more!

Not much you can do about it.

And as another person mentioned...unless your boyfriend insured 'his license', so he is covered no matter what he drives-he shouldn't have been able to get a policy on a vehicle that already has one...
