  1. The first round of the Qatar Masters was made awfully difficult by winds of up to 25 mph, and only 17 of 131 golfers in the field carded scores at or under par. South Africa’s Retief Goosen handled the wind better than anyone on his way to a three-under 69 and a one-shot lead. Germany’s Martin Kaymer didn’t fare nearly as well, shooting a five-over 77.

“I drove it nicely, but it was tough to get the ball close to the flags and when you were putting you were getting blown all over the place,” said Goosen, whose last European Tour win came four years ago at this same event. “It wasn’t easy. I putted well in these conditions, made a few good putts and par saves and that kept my score together.”

Kaymer, playing for the first time as World No. 2 and with a chance to overtake Lee Westwood as World No. 1 with a good performance, made more bogeys in his opening round Thursday than he did in all four rounds two weeks ago when he won the entire Abu Dhabi Championship. The roughest hole for Kaymer was No. 15, where his drive landed his rocks and he made double bogey.

Meanwhile, Westwood shot a one-over 73, putting him four shots back and tied for 18th place. Four golfers share second place at -2, including defending champion Robert Karlsson of Sweden.
