So myself and 4 friends are traveling to Spain for about a week. I have an old Motorola Razr phone that collects dust upstairs. I was thinking of taking it with us to use in case we need to make reservations/calls.

My question is whether its cheaper to buy a SIM card before I leave or purchase one while in Spain.

  1. There are a number of locotorios in all the tourist places with cheaper rates than cell phones so I would say. Leave the phone at home and believe me... you won´t makingmany calls

  2. I would suggest you bring your phone with you, take it into a local phone shop and have it opened here, its normally about 10 euros. The price of a sim card varies as there is usually credit on them. The main networks here are Movistar and Vodafone, there are others like Amena but the reception isn't that good in some areas. You may also find it may be cheaper to buy a phone here with credit on it.

  3. Think - cheaper in Spain and shop assistants speak English in the tourist areas.

  4. No,

You should buy a prepaid SIM while in Spain--that will be much cheaper.

(When I travelled to China, I bought SIM card there and  it was a lot cheaper ($10 usd) but here it will cost me ($50 usd)

But make sure you have an Unlocked GSM Tri-band or Quad-band phone before you leave U.S.

  5. if u buy it in us u will save about 7 dolars but it might break in spain so you couldnt return it

  6. Why does it matter if you speak English?  Or am I missing something?

  7. Easy question.

If the old phone is not locked to your operator in the US, then it will be a lot cheaper to get the SIM card in Spain.

If it is locked, then you can't use your phone with a Spanish SIM card.
