  1. have looked over by your trusted mechanic before any monies change hands, if he says it's ok further check to see if timing belt has been replaced [it is due now] if not done i recommend replacing all components [belt, tensioner roller, idler roller, gas spring tensioner, and water pump] if any of these components fail severe valve damage can result [expecting 200k miles out of tensioners and water pump is just asking for trouble, belt only replacement is not enough]

also i recommend transmission fluid changes every 15k for turbo cars drivin in city traffic and 30k for non-turbo/no city driving cars [must use a volvo only fluid]

yes these cars are reliable too [if properly maintained and all services preformed when due] i have several customers who are in the 250+ k range in mileage and the cars still look good and drive like a well cared for car with 60 k miles on it

  2. Has the transmission been serviced regularly, or been replaced? The 850's which I believe has the same trans as the S70 had problems. If it is a turbo, but well maintained, it will need a re-manufactured or new turbo in the next 50,000 miles. But if driven lightly the engine will last double the miles it has.

Reliable? Not as reliable as a Toyota or Honda, but more reliable then any older German car.

Repairs can be expensive, more than the Japanese, less than the Germans.

But you can not beat the safety, if you have children, do not buy a decade old Japanese car.
