Question:

Should I put a collar on my kitten?

Ok, one more kitten question. What are the arguments for and against putting a collar on a cat? I'm generally against it - I know I wouldn't like to wear one, and we once had to rescue a cat that got its front leg through the collar as well and was in a lot of pain. My family has had adult cats in the past and we've never done it, and never wished we had. Now I've got my very own kitty which is my responsibility I want to be sure I'm making the right decision.

He is microchipped, if that makes any difference.

  1. Is your cat going to be indoors or or outside?

If he he is microchipped, and your animal control actually scans for chips, than he should be fine if he is caught be animal control.  Not all Animal control scans, or even has a scanner.  Your best bet is to call them and ask.  Also, a microchip isn't obvious to a person on the street.  Its just one part of the solution.

But if a person finds him, and decided to keep him, having a collar on would be better, because it would be obvious that he has an owner.

As for putting a collar on a kitten, Depending on the age, If the kitten is four or five months old, than he's not too little.  If he is a few weeks old, than no.  Also, by putting the collar on him right now, for a few seconds will get him used to the feel of it.

Collars can be dangerous, but if properly tight around a neck, you can minimize many of the dangers, such as leg caught, or tooth caught (happened to me)

I think anytime your cat will be outdoors, wether in a cat carrier or on his own, he needs to be wearing a collar.
