  1. get rid of that wood now and go cut a branch off a tree to use The arsenic can kill the birds and you through the eggs

  2. no chickens will pick at tape and get to wood anyways.... replace wood with untreated wood..

  3. Ductape won't work, the chickens would peel it off and don't use arsenic treated wood or any sort of treated wood. Arsenic is a deadly poison and other treated woods might also have negative effects. Use some sticks or branches that you can find in a local park or your backyard. (Make sure that they haven't been sprayed or contain stuff that is bad for chickens)

  4. Duct tape is something birds love to pick at...They could clean that off in hours.  Different option is to prime and paint the wood with a safe outdoor paint.  Watch for chipping and peeling and wear in the future.  There is a thing called vinyl adhesive that you could wrap around temporarily until you replace the wood.  However, that may wear off with claws.  You could also wrap old cloth or material until you replace the wood or cover it.  They may shred that also but not as fast as duct tape.

    Good luck with your project.
