I have $160+ dollars towards a new computer. Think it would be safe to spend $40?

With that much, you'll get a cheap computer.  Save your money for something better!

The key to saving is resisting temptation. When you have a goal in mind and apply your money there, you should not use it until you have reached your goal. Of course it is your money, so if you think whatever it is that your $40 can buy is more important than getting the computer ASAP, then by all means do it. Just really consider what you are doing in a cost/benefit analysis. Is what you are gaining greater than what you are risking or not?
