Should I quit taekwondo?

I really dislike going to taekwondo. It's a bit too asian for me.. not because taekwondo is asian, it's because all the studfents in my class are all frigin ultra asians who think they're the coolest kids in the world.

I really do NOT like sparring becase I get really nervous and most of the time suck.

But I love the feeling I get after class after a big workout..

Should I quit because I just lost my passion for it. or keep doing it?

Did you have any similar experiences?

  1. It really depends upon what kind of emphasis your teacher is placing on it. Sparring is necessary in all martial arts, but if you're in a situation where it's extremely competitive, that can be a drag. However, if you keep up with it, and practice, you will be able to break boards with your hands, as well as the back kick, which is very cool!

If possible, first try to find a teacher who emphasizes the spiritual qualities, as well as mastery of the forms. If not, then please try to find a good teacher (sensai) of Aikido. Aikido is totally defensive, and at the same time extremely powerful. It is also a very spiritual art, as well as a very good workout.

  2. We all go through ups and downs with our motivation and passion for things, martial arts, or anything else.

I personally think there are a lot of benefits in continuing, but there are also benefits in working out otherwise.

If you did quit, would you have the motivation to work out elsewhere?

Only you can decide what's right for you.  I quit martial arts once for a few years, and I still regret it today.

  3. maybe just look for another style of martial arts to train because you only really seem ot dislike the people and sparring so just find somethign with people you like and a style you really like.

  4. Well, it's up to you. We can't tell you if you want to keep going or not. Since you're a sam dan I'd say just quite it and take a new style. You've learned pretty much all you can from this one. You've got a good stand up style now take a grappling art (NOT MMA!). Maybe something like Maharlika Kuntaw, BJJ, Japanese Jujitsu, Hapkido, Judo, Aikido, or even Ninjutsu.

  5. I don't know exactly where you live, but maybe you could find a place to train that doesn't emphasize sparring. Also, not all people who do tae kwon do worship Asian culture. (they don't where I take it).

    Good Luck!

  6. if the only thing you like about it is the workout then how about doing some cardio classes? drop whatever you dislike...lifes too short to be boring
