Question:

Should I quit the violin, at least for now?

I've been playing the violin since sixth grade and am heading into my second year of college. I played in the universities symphony and chamber orchestras last year. As much as I liked it ,I have found it inconvenient because of extra rehearsals and the extra costs of playing the instrument. On top of that, I realize I can do better things with my time like work more hours at my job or pick up another class that counts toward my major( Business Management Information Systems). I've accomplished everything I've wanted to with the violin, and I don't plan on going on professionally as the chances are dismal. Should call it quits? I got two weeks to decide!!!

  1. I had the same situation. It'd be a pitty if you'd quit, but I quit and now I have more time for other things. I still pick my violin up sometimes and play it, but I feel much better now.

    Do what's best for you.

  2. It's a tough decision - but I think you might be better off quitting the university symphony and chamber orchestra. If you're not planning on pursuing music as the main bread-winning career, then you shouldn't waste your time and effort. However, you can still take your violin out of its case and play to your hearts content when you want.

I know of some cities that have symphonies specifically for the amateur/part-time musicians. You can also find some people to play chamber music - maybe form a quartet with others who play at your level but are also not interested in going professional. You can play at weddings and other gigs for some pocket money. (Non-professional musicians usually charge around $50-60.)

It's really quite impossible to cut off all ties to an instrument that's been with you forever. I've seen it in many people. Playing a musical instrument and going through all the things that come with it (music competitions, friends in orchestra, private teachers' life lessons, etc) have positively impacted many, making them better people.

Best wishes to you and your career!

  3. Don't quit on the instrument completely. Quit the organized practices and just play it in your own spare time as a getaway. Don't let all your hard work go to waste!

  4. As a musician, I hate to see you quit.  Even though you do not plan on a musical profession it is a great get away from the so called real world.  I will not tell you to quit or to even take a break.

Is there a community group that might not take as much of your time, but would keep you going?
