Question:

Should I re-learn German?

I took German in college, but haven't kept up with it. My college courses emphasized reading and writing over speaking (reading/writing is more valuable for doctoral programs than speaking.) Besides personal enrichment, is there any reason for me to pull out my old books and get back into it? I'm in law, have no German friends or family, and don't anticipate traveling to Germany anytime soon. Should I put the effort towards learning Spanish or Portuguese?

  1. Why not learn again another language? Personal enrichment by itself is a very good motive to re learn. And abour spanish or portuguese, unless you are trying to go to Brazil or Portugal, learn spanish. Both languages are very alike and a native portuguese speaker can understand you a little if you speak slowly.

  2. I used to live in Germany and I've lost most of what I learned.  Spanish might be of more use to you if you don't plan on really using the German again.  I say go with Spanish and after you master that, go back and brush up on your German.

  3. idk-but listening to the band Tokio Hotel does help when learning german. It helped for me and I did'nt know any german before

  4. personally, i think its a good idea to begin spanish, but also crack open your old german books. you never know, all the info might just come rushing back to you. plus, if you plan on ever living in europe, german is one of the main languages. plus, its really useful to know more than one language, that way, you'll even get more job opportunities. so i say, go for spanish, but begin reading german as well.
