Question:

Should I recycle my neighborhood cans ?

What do you guys think. Is this a good way to make some spare money in my neighborhood ? I thought about handing out flyers to my neighbors mail boxes. That if they could fill a 30 gallon garbage bag, that they could email or call me to schedule a pick up. I would then turn in lots of bags of cans in to the local recycling center and earn some spare cash. Is that a good idea or me being greedy for cash. Times are tough with rising gas prices. ...what if you had a flyer at your mail asking for your spare cans in a bag. And all you had to do was email or call someone to pick up at your front door. Woud you do it ? Thanks YAHOO FRIENDS.

  1. I think it would be a great thing to do. And don't think you're being greedy one bit, for you are helping the Earth become a better place for our generation and generations to come to live in. I agree with you that with gas prices these days you need to find a way to earn some extra money, and this is a great way to do that and make a difference in our society, just think of how great you'll feel after accomplishing both of these. I think your idea of picking up their cans is good because then they won't feel like they have to do any work which may make them avoid doing so. Another way you could do it is if you have a gazeebo in your neightborhood or if you just have a good meeting area close by to where you live you could tell your fellow neighbors to just drop off their cans at that meeting place on a certain day. I hope I helped you make your decision...and know the world is proud of you and thanks you for making a differnce in keeping our Earth green! 8D

  2. I think that is a great idea and that you should go ALL the way with it!!!!!!!

  3. YES TO EVERYTHING! GOOD JOB!

  4. Well, I would laugh if I received that in my mail box, and it would go right into my recycling box, because I clean my cans and collect a couple of garbage bags full then I take them to the store. Its a good idea but maybe give the money towards a community event. Like, for instance a food closet. They certainly can use extra money as well. Think about it; when there is a fire in your community and people loose everything they rely on the food cupboard to help them out. Just an idea, you would be helping in your neighborhood  in lots of ways.

  5. It is better to spare some money to recycle the neighbourhood cans. But it is not good to do it always only by you. Provide awareness about environment and make the neighbors to clean their vicinity.

  6. I commend you for your idea. It's small ideas like yours that  metamorphisize into large enterprises. A lot of recycling operations began as a one man operation. It's smart to diversify with the economy the way it is, and aluminum is beyond .70/pound now - cans add up quickly.

Not knowing your neighbors, it's hard to say what they will or will not do. But it's worth a try. Stuffing their mailbox with a flyer is a postal violation, but you could hang it from their door. (It wouldn't offend me) If they are willing to do it, it's hard to say how long they would continue the process. Beer cans start to ferment and smell, soda cans are magnets for fruit flies, bees and ants. Once people are over the inconveniences, they may stop collecting cans for you. So, if you have a solutions for this, and perhaps the unsightliness of a 30 gallon bag, than you may have a solution. Maybe a weekly pickup?

Also, small businesses are potential markets for you. Maybe the beginning of a small business. Maybe you can work out a deal with a bar or restaurant that has soda/beer cans and work out a pickup schedule.

In addition, maybe you can provide recycle boxes in areas of high traffic where there are soda machines.

And thinking small business, placing recycle boxes at local events (arts festivals, rib cook offs, etc) could yield lots of cans. But you would have to get a city permit and permission, I imagine.  A lot of festivals are wasteful and virtually untapped opportunities.

    I hope this helps.

  7. If you don't have curbside recycling pickup already, then it is a great idea.
