Question:

Should I rent a room in my apartment to someone of the opposite gender?

I put an ad on craigslist to rent out a room in an apartment that I plan on renting. I plan on renting a 2 bedroom 1 bath. Since I'm single I was planning on renting the other bedroom out.

I'm a male in my late 20s and got responses from females aged 21-26. Is this strange? I don't mind a female roomate as long as they are clean and well behaved. My only concern is having to share a bathroom with a female? Should I change my ad and write male prefered?

  1. I don't think it's strange that you got responses from women, since both men and women having housing needs.  What are your concerns, specifically, about sharing a bathroom with a woman?  If you really prefer a male roommate, by all means say so in your ad.  It's better to be honest up front than to waste anyone's time or be an unpleasant roommate after someone moves in.

  2. i dont find it strange at all. and personally if it was me i would prefer a female over a guy roommate . no matter the s*x gender you can have both good and bad room mates in all honesty would you prefer a a nasty and misbehaved male room  mate  over a clean wellbehaved female? I think you would want the same respect and manners regardless. perhaps you may be feeling a bit bashful sharing with a female. but in all honesty you could probably find they would be the most respectful to your apartment and to yourself Good luck.

  3. Better to get the same gender.

  4. It is your apartment, and absolutely your choice. If having a female would make you uncomfortable, put male preferred. I saw "preferred" one or the other a lot when I was looking.

You have to live with this person. You could, however, look for an apartment that has 2 bathrooms, it might make it easier.

A lot of problems creep up about bathroom usage. Many people like to shower, or take a lot of time in the bathroom in the morning. You might want to look for someone who has a little bit different schedule than you do. Make sure you have general house rules written down that the other person will need to agree to. Bring it up when they call, so you can immediately eliminate people if you need to. In general if you want someone clean, a women might actually be a better bet, but you will probably wind up losing space in the bathroom. A generalization, but one I have found to be fairly accurate in my experience.

    Good luck

  5. Maybe you'll be lucky and meet not only a great roommate but someone who in time could become a partner for life.. the world works in miraculous ways.. .. of course you put a lock on the bathroom door .. or you put a key in the door so a woman will not be disturbed by you when she is in there and vice versa you lock the door..  a female is usually neater.. and as I said who knows.. if a female in that age group answers the ad.. she could just possibly.. not very likely but still possibly turn out to be someone you want to get to know better but never take advantage of the situation that she is renting from you.. but a friendship could develop over time and that could perhaps lead to more.. ..  I would leave it and wait who answers the add.. you can always say ''no'' and change it'' to ''male roommate wanted later''

  6. They may think they can get a boyfriend out of the deal.  You can lay down the "law" that the roommate issue is strictly business.  Women can be loud obnoxious pigs though.  Not all women are perfect.  Then again more women are cleaner than men.  I suggest making sure you have a good contract written up and ask for renting references.  Find out if she has rented from another apartment complex before, and ask them how she is as a renter.

  7. ~~The most important thing is you get along well, and rent to a responsible person no matter the gender. I know lots of people renting to the opposite s*x and it has worked out as well as same s*x. Just be thorough on background information and ppersonality prior to renting!~~

  8. If you need the money, go for it! =]
