Should I replace trash compactor or install something different in that space?

Trash compactor came with house, we've never had one - so dilemna is should I fix this one/which would be an upgraded one or use the space for something else - it is located on my island in the kitchen?

My friends have it in their houses.  They just took it out or use it as a  normal trash can when it quit working.  Reason?  They don't think it's worthwhile to spend that money on it.

If it's in my kitchen, I would choose to remove it and use that space for something else.  Maybe just put another regular trash can in it.

It's your house.  It should be done in the way that feels the most convenient for you.
