Question:

Should I report my in laws to animal authorities? They have 12 cats, none of them have been to a vet.?

I am considering reporting my in-laws to the animal authorities because they have seven cats, and one of the cats just had another litter. I have told them to take the cats in to see a vet to get de-wormed and fixed but they never do. I am worried that these cats will keep having more litters and they aren't doing anything about it. I think it's horrible and that these cats deserve a better life. Would you report your in-laws?

  1. You're not betraying your in-laws. You're actually betraying the cats if you don't help them! They could have a wide variety of diseases, and no one even knows it! They need to be checked out, and as fast as possible. If your in-laws truly care for them, they won't mind having the cats attended to! I would most certainly report my in-laws, or anyone else that would see fit to hold so many cats in one living space. It's not fair to the animals! No one would want to live in uncertainty, knowing they could drop from sickness at any time!

  2. Are they indoors cats or outdoor cats? Are they getting food and water daily? Do any of them look sick (besides the worms). If yes on the sick part and they have not taken them to a vet for their shots, yes. report them. You can do it without leaving your name. 12 cats is a lot. They need to get checked by the vet and be spayed/neutered before more kittens are brought into the world. Inbreeding in cats is common but the kittens can have major health problems.

don't feel guilty if you have to report them, your doing it in the best interest of the cats.

Before reporting though, is it possible, you can some of the cats into the vets for them to help them out?

  3. If you feel that these cats are not being cared for properly, then yes, you should report them.

Is it betrayal to the in laws? I can't answer that for you, but I will say that since the cats can't speak for themselves, you would be betraying helpless animals if you didn't do something to help them.

What can you live with? becomes the question.

    Good luck.

  4. Despite what you may think, you have to do what is best for the cats. I have a friend with 17 (count 'em!!) cats. While her house smells a bit, I can guarantee you that each of those cats is loved, spoiled & looked after like princes and princesses.

BUT: each of those cats is desexed. They have all had all their  vaccinations and if any of them is sick, they go straight to the vet. Cats that haven't been fixed are a huge problem and it's extremely irresponsible of your in-laws to have them that way. You must, for the welfare of the cats, "dob" your in-laws in.

Cats can pick up plenty of diseases too, and with that many in close quarters, they need to be vaccinated and well maintained. But the kittens will have their own kittens in 6-8 months if the problem isn't solved ***very soon*** so act now. If your in-laws weren't caring for a child correctly, it would be the right thing to report them, and as a responsible citizen and a cat lover, you need to give the cats the same respect.

However, if you can, report anonymously to avoid conflict. Have you spoken to your partner about this, and if not, do.

  5. If the general health of the cats is good, Animal Control will do no more than advise them of the steps they should be taking.  Such as spay/neuter, annual exams, inoculations, etc.  Animal Control will also offer suggestions about low cost/no cost options for care.

You can contact Animal Control and find out about the options for low cost/no cost options for care and tell your in-laws.  And, if you could help financially that certainly might be welcome.

Simply reporting them might cause long term problems with your family.

    Good Luck!

  6. It is not the wrong thing to do if you report them. It is best for the cats! If they have worms, the worms will kill the kittens fast and eventually the adult cats to, they need to get to a vet, b4 reporting her, ask her if she will let you pay for it, if you can pay for it. If you can not or she does not let you then, yes. Report them.

  7. I called on mine, because they had a puppy and would not take him to the vet and would tie him to the tree, it was horrible so I called on them and they came to take the dog, and now they won't get anymore pets which is best because they do not know how to treat them, oh and when I called I did not give my name so they never knew it was me! good luck and help those kitties!
