Question:

Should I report the accident?

Somebody hit my car from behind and wanted to settle it privately. That means he doesn't want to have the accident reported or notify the insurance.

If the accident damage is less than $1000, the guideline says I don't need to report. However, what if for some reason, the owner of other vehicle report the accident?

  1. Since the accident was not your fault, you should report it. Some areas, you can go to the police department and file a written report. What a person says, and what he does are two different things. What if he decides not to pay later? You would have no proof.

  2. It's always a good idea to report the accident. What if the other driver doesn't pay or is not willing to pay enough? I know your trying to be nice and help the other driver out, but it's just not worth it.

If the other driver was at-fault, their insurance should be paying for the damage.
