After 4 months have passed since he broke my heart and avoiding him, he emailed this morning that he has cancer and wants me to reassure him he'll be ok. Should I respond? I am still mad at him.

  1. No, isn't he your "ex" for a reason?

  2. It wouldn't hurt to email him back.  An email won't cost you anything.

I feel uncertain about the reassuring him he'll be ok.  How bad is the cancer? Has it spread?

You could just email him and tell him that you hope things work out ok for him.  When someone has cancer it is a very emotional time for them.  Support is very important during this time.

  3. Ignore.  Do not feed into his manipulation.    He knows your soft underbelly; doesn't he?

  4. I second what Ash says...he is you "ex" for a reason.  If you were together for any period of time, I'm sure you feel some sympathy for him.

Not to say he's this slimy, but men have been known to use something like this, either real or made up, to weasel their way back into an "ex's" life.

Give him the benefit of the doubt that the cancer is genuine, but don't let yourself become involved with him again.  Send him a nice get-well card, and limit the message inside to something like, "Sorry about what you're going through at the moment.  Get well soon.  My thoughts and prayers for a speedy recovery are with you.

Do NOT sign it, "Love, (insert your name here).  In fact, just sign your name without any closing....and don't use any nicknames or pet names he may have had for you.

And then change your e-mail address.

Am I being harsh and callous...yes I am.  But I have an "ex" of my own.  She doesn't want me back, but I've seen some of the things she's stooped to in order to cause problems for me. You've had your heart broken once.  You cannot afford to give this guy the opportunity to do it again.

There are times you have to think of yourself first...this is one of them.

  5. yes  you should

    hope he gets better
