Question:

Should I retake a class for a better grade?

You see I took Geometry over the summer a six week class. I got a D in it. I needed a C to go on into Algebra 2, but if my parents talk to my conselour then I can go on into Algebra 2 without retaking Geometry. The thing is I can also retake Geometry and take Algebra 2 at the sametime during the same school year. What would help my GPA and what would colleges perfer? Also I'm a Sophomore if that makes a difference.

  1. In college, I took Statistics from a very bad teacher during summer school and received a D (ouch).  I re-took the class during the fall from a very good teacher and received an A.  Not only did my GPA go up, I actually had an excellent understanding of Statistics.

  2. Colleges won't take a "D" in geometry as a passing grade.  They expect you to have a "C" or better.

So yes, retake it.  You don't need geometry to pass Algebra II - they're VERY different - so you could even take them at the same time if your counselor agrees.  Geometry will be easier this time around because you're spreading it out over the whole year instead of cramming it into six weeks.

But remember this - if you're struggling, get tutoring as soon as you realize you need help.  Don't wait until the end of the year and have a "D" or an "F" and then retake it in summer.  Get help and get the grade up early and save your summers for being a teenager.

  3. Well, seeing as though you got a D in Geometry, I wouldn't suggest you move on to a more difficult math class without covering the necessities in basic knowledge of math.

I suggest you take Geometry and Algebra 2 at the same time during the school year.  That way, you would be taking the course you had intended to take, while retaking Geometry for a better grade.  That way, when colleges do look at your grades, they won't think "This person got a D and yet went on to Algebra II?! WHAT IS UP WITH THAT?" since they would see the updated grade in Geometry, if you do pass that class.

  4. You will have to take the geometry class over again to balance it with a B in order for it be 2.0 or C average. If you don't do this it will show up on your high school transcript.
