Should I say this at my interview-or later?

I have an interview tomorrow at Kohl's. I'm sure i'll get the job (part-time cust service) The actual store is opening in october. Problem is I have a paid cruise in november-the day of thanksgiving. They don't open on thanksgiving day, but i will need the friday, saturday, and sunday off. I know those are the times that department stores are very busy. Is this something that I should say after they have told me I have the job, or should I wait until later? Remember I won't be starting until the store opens in october, that's why I don't want to wait so long until I ask for those days.

  1. tell them at the interview

  2. I would suggest telling them you have a planned trip in November when the offer you the job (if you offer that info sooner they could use it against you a reason not to hire you), so in other words if they offer it to you, tell them Yes, but you have a planned trip in November and you can't reschedule, can they give you that time off.  Just don't wait after you start working to say anything.  If in the interview they ask if you have any time you'll need off then you should tell them then.  If you tell them you need the time off when they offer the job, if they say it's ok, that's an agreement you will make w/them to guarantee the time off.  However, be prepared that they may tell you they can't allow that time off, you should then turn down the job.

  3. No. You know that Black Friday is the busiest day of the year. Saturday is almost as busy.  Taking the job, and not telling them out front, would be unacceptable. It would be grounds to fire you.

This reminds me of a Seinfeld episode, where Kramer was re-hired to work at the place that he had been on strike for years.  He was hired as extra staff for the holiday.  When the holidays came, he wanted time off.  He was fired.  That is what Kohl's could do to you.

  4. It's a role of the dice either way. I'd get the job and then inconvience them. If you say something now  they may pick another person.

  5. I have always been bad and accepted a job and then mentioned things like that after-the-fact.   But if you think this time is critical for them it is only fair to mention it.   But not right away.   Mention it as they are offering you the job.

  6. Later!

  7. I would politely mention it before. If you wait till after, it looks like you waited till the last minute. Tell them before and emphasize that you regret not being able to be there those days. Offer to make up the days during another busy time. Show that you are willing to make up for it and work with them, and I am sure it will be fine. Best of luck.

  8. you need to tell them right away....once the offer is given, you need to say, by the way I wanted to advise you that I have a pre-planned paid vacation I will be taking Thanksgiving weekend, Please let me know if I need to put the request in writing....remember honesty is "still" the best policy...Best of luck!!!!!, I hope you get the job!!!!

  9. I've been in this situation before, and there's a couple approaches you can take

I had an interview with Casey's at the beginning of last summer. I knew I was going to be gone a week for vacation, and also a week for Church camp.  As the interview was wrapping up, I kind of did something like...'Oh yeah and I'll be gone a couple weeks in August...' the manager was kinda reluctant cuz apparently they don't give you that many days off but I don't know.

Bottom line, if you're only going to be gone for those three days, you can probably just tell them like three-four weeks in advance. However, if you're going to be gone for at least a week, you should probably tell them at the interview.

  10. You will be much better off if you go ahead and ask for those days off!!! Its okay that you have a life!!!! They understand. Plus, you can always trade days with someone if it comes down to it.Actually, you don't ASK for the days off, you just tell them that you have previous plans. Be assertive.

  11. tell them until you got the job. good luck getting those days off because remember Black friday is the day after thanksgiving so you have to make sure you get it off because most stores are very busy the day after thanksgiving.

  12. It probably doesn't matter that much.  if you tell them before the offer, you won't get the offer.  If you tell them after you have the job, you will lose the job.

    It's a lose/lose proposition.

  13. your boss would respect you more if you let them know a head of time, if not they are going to think your not  ready to take the position. Explain to him/her whats going on, and just to let you ,you can always come apply at marshall's( Iam the manager).

  14. I think you should tell them about the booked holiday at the interview, somewhere towards the end, after the important details about yourself have been covered. Your employer will appreciate the fact that you are being forthright about your situation, and that should hopefully make you look like a more favorable employee as well.

If an employer changed their mind about you over something like that, then you would have to question whether you would want to be working for them in the long term.

  15. Be up front and honest with them from the start let them know that you already have made plans for those days and you will be needing them off just make sure that when they say it is OK then get it in writing and keep reminding them the closer it gets to the time so they cant come back and say we didn't know and you have to work you don't want anything to mess up your trip mention it at the interview after they offer you the job good luck and have fun on your trip

  16. As soon as they tell you that you have the job, spit this straight back at them.

  17. ask after you actually get offered the position. thinking about taking days off before you even have the job is a little premature
