Question:

Should I sell my D80 for a Canon?

I currently have a D80 but was wondering whether it's worth it to upgrade to a Canon, EOS 40d or even 5d (although that's a monetry stretch). I've always had Canons and prefer them but am in two minds whether to just spend the money on better lenses for my D80. I'm studying photography at university and most of my colleagues have canons so i'm not able to swap lenses or borrow them which would come in handy.

  1. Hold fire on the 5D, a successor is expected very soon, meaning a better and the possibility of very good deals on the exsisting model.

A 40D is in someways more versatile in that it will take EF-S lenses as well, though at the expense of a 1.6 focal conversion (meaning you loose the wide angle, but gain tele)

The 5D seems to have some problems with dust and light fall off on the sensor, but if you need a canon ff it's certainly the way to go without spending a serious wedge.

  2. yes

  3. If you do want to upgrade, like Paul said, better hold off on the 5D.  I'd go with the 40D.

Some added advice would be to stick with one brand!  It'll be cheaper on you to stick with either Canon or Nikon.  Don't try to constantly keep up with the latest, greatest thing.  Lenses are something you should worry more about wasting your money on, if you keep switching brands then you really will be wasting your money a lot.

It's always nice to be able to swap lenses with friends :)  Better think good and hard about whether you wanna switch back to Canon or not.  If I were in your position, I'd go ahead and spend the money to upgrade to the 40D because it could save you money to be able to borrow lenses instead of buying all the lenses you want for the D80.  I would keep a couple lenses that I would shoot with the most, and if I needed a different one for any reason just borrow a friends.

  4. If the D80 is a Nikon then going from Nikon to Canon is not an upgrade.

  5. At some point you will have to choose a brand and stick with it. Unless you have unlimited funds! In which case...buy both! It's not so much the camera itself that is the issue, but the glass. I've invested $4000 in my camera bodies, but I've got about $9000 in lenses. Not to mention flashes and cables and everything else that is brand, if not body specific. Canon and Nikon are going to go back and forth forever. Today nikon is better, tomorrow Canon is better...Once you have your kit of equipment established, it's going to take a pretty dramatic improvement to cause a switch of brands. If you haven't spent a lot on gear yet, you have the luxury of perhaps making a change. I wouldn't refer to what you are considering as an upgrade. It is a lateral move. If you are more comfortable with Canons ergonomics by all means go for it! But make sure you're doing it for the right reasons. It could get very expensive going back and forth!

  6. In My Opinion, I Would Sell My D80

And Save Up For The 5D.... It's A

    Great, Full-Framed Sensored Camera

Which Give You Much Move Coverage

In The Viewfinder.. And Finer Tone

    And Definition In Your Images...

it's a wonderful camera, it has two.eight more megapixels then your d80, which will mean slightly better image quality. Also, this is a semi-professional model camera, whereby the Nikon d80 isn't. the d80 is more of an advanced-starter camera for the average photographer.

Much more pros. use the 5d then the d80, they would use the 5d in studio, just because it's a much better camera, with 35mm like image quality, and alot of other features..

however, when you sell your d80, you won't have enough money, you'll still have to save up a few more hundred dollars so that you can buy the 5d, with lenses. Which brings us to the next topic. you could perhaps get another nikon DSLR, so you can sell the d80 body only, and use the lens on the new camera. In my opinion, if you already have more that one lens, or on a tight budget, you should stick to the system of that lens. Keep in mind that the 5d is a very expensive, and a big upgrade to the Nikon d80.

perhaps you'd be interested in the D300

For about the same price as the 5D?

    http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-12-3MP-Digit...

you can get it for under 1,700$ body only, and use the same lenses from the d80. if you have any more questions about buying a more advanced digital SLR you can contact me at:
