Question:

Should I sell or keep my Mercedes Benz?

My parents gave me their 1997 Mercedes C230 and I was wondering should I sell or keep it? and if sell, for how much? It has only 69,000 miles on it, has been well taken care of, and is in great condition. The only reason why I would consider selling it is because I have read that Mercedes have been having some quality and reliability issues over the past few years and I don't want my car to be braking down and c**p.

  1. Keep it any problems would have already shown up by now. If you know the car and know who has taken care of it. Like your parents so you know the car.

Any car is prone to breaking down.

With only 69,000 miles on it that thing isn't even broke in good yet.

Just keep it up good:  You know preventive maintenance on it like grease and oil change, plugs since it isn't a D so assuming it is gasoline.

    It should last you awhile.

  2. Sell this car immediately; every time I've taken my 1995 C280 MB in for anything it's a guaranteed $800 repair bill, minimum....  These are wonderful cars to drive when they're fully operative, but, weird, extremely expensive things go wrong with them; pretty frequently.

  3. well it depends on your need for cash or not.. if low then sell it but if not then keep it. If you sell than for about 15000 dollars to  20000 dollars. I mean if its in good condition than it should be worth it in order to live up to the mercedes name.

  4. 97 is before that Chrysler bought it. That car that you have is a good car. if you want toi sell it please lat me know.I love my benz. Good luck. You should do things like tune up oil fule filter change, stuff like that.

  5. It's amazing how much bad info you get online these days!

Find out if your parents used regular oil or synthetic....then keep using whichever they used. With regular oil you use 15w40, and make sure it is blended for gasoline engines, not diesel. If you're using synthetic use ONLY Mobil1 0w40. DO NOT use 5w30, no matter what you do!

The car is worth keeping, you won't get much for it if you sell it, and the maintenance costs will not be as high as they would be for an E-class or S-class. You should budget $1,500/year for maintenance.

  6. Keep it!  Change the oil regularly and take care of it.  It will last you a long time.

  7. I'd keep it.  The 1997s were pretty good over all.  The worst you're likely to see are some glitches with the radio and maybe the Secondary AIR Pump, part of the emissions system.  The engine and trans are pretty much bullet proof.  And as you may have noticed it's pretty economical to run with 30 MPG on the highway.  Change the oil every 7,500 miles or so (use Mobil 1 synthetic, 5W-30) and it will last you another 200,000 miles EASILY.

You won't get a heck of a lot for it by selling it, less than $6,000 probably, and you won't get anything near as nice for that money.  Ignore the poster who claims $15k, that's just absurd for a 97 C-Class; even an AMG C-36 wouldn't command that much.

  8. i would sale it for a couple  thousand then drive your parents car to work and save up money and get you a newer modle with about the same millage thats what i would do in your situation
