Ok, I got a leather bag for my 18th birthday from my aunt and uncle. I'm vegan and totally against leather etc. so i'll never use the bag. Should I sell it on ebay? It is £70 RRP and I feel like it is being wasted in my room.. but I'll feel guilty if I sell it too.

  1. thats up to you

  2. Ethically a vegan friend of mine would say to bury it because to sell it, you are profiting from the sale of an animal product.

I think this is a personal decision that only you can make. Weighing your values, your need for money may be a factor.

If you don't need the money selling the bag and giving all or a part of the money to an animal charity may be the best compromise.

  3. Sell it.

  4. I have absolutely no idea how you equate a leather bag to your food choices....that is quite a stretch.  But if you somehow think you are being principaled by not keeping it, donate it.  Making money from it seems to dash any thought of being principaled.

  5. I'm confused. If this was from your aunt and uncle, shouldn't they have known your beliefs? And if not, you should have told them and you shouldn't have accepted the bag. That would have been the best thing to do. You could have done that politely. Give the bag back to them and be honest. Selling it is just tacky. And that makes your beliefs look false because it says that you can't keep the bag because of your belief against leather, yet you can make a profit from it by selling it? If you really have strong beliefs about this you'll give the bag back to your aunt and uncle and let them sell it or keep it. Don't go over their heads.

  6. are you telling me your a vegan poser???

  7. wow

  8. From time to time we all get unwanted or inappropriate gifts.-often friends and relatives are unaware of our principles despite their good intentions.

I am sure that your aunt and uncle would far rather you buy something with the monies received from the sale of the bag and that is of use/enjoyment to you than have the bag discarded in a corner of the room.

    As for the 'guilt'-come clean.

Simply tell them your problem-add that theirs was a kind thought-but that if it's o.k. with them you'd rather use the proceeds from the sale to buy whatever you feel you need/would get more pleasure from.

It may be a bag made from synthetic materials or something else altogether.

I'll bet you anything they wont mind in the least and respect both your principles and integrity not to mention your mature manner in handling this
