Question:

Should I send a car dealership a 'thank you'?

I just bought my first new car and had a great experience at the dealership. I am a woman and expected to be treated a little differently, but that wasn't the case. Everyone from the sales team to the finance dept to the GM himself, were respectful while still doing their jobs. I did have to 'haggle' a little (of course I expected to), but I got the car I wanted and for the exact price I was willing to pay. So, is there a nice gesture I can send them as a way of thanking them? I know they were just doing their jobs, but I also know they went out of their way to please me because... I know their boss :)

Thanks for any help!

  1. Wait. If you're still happy a year from now, send it then.

  2. Let me say this from a dealer perspective.

All day long, every day, and everywhere we go - people think we are pariahs.  We hear nothing but negatives, and no one every has a good word for the dealer.  We bust our buts day in and day out to make customers happy.  And at the end of it all, after they have gotten the car they want, at a price they can afford, somehow we are still bast**ds.

On the rare occasion when we do get a 'thank you' it goes a very long way.  Your salesperson would particularly appreciate it, since they get the life beat out of them from customers half the time, and managers the other half.

So yes, if you had a good experience, please let them know.  And then ask your salesperson about a 'bird dog' program.  Most dealers pay for referrals.  So if you tell a friend about your experience, and send them to your slesperson, he may be able to reward you when they make a deal.

Send the card - it means volumes.

  3. It's not expected but a card to the salesman thanking them for the good service would certainly be appreciated.

Making a relationship is a good way to get great service from them in the future as well.  When it comes time for maintenance or years from now when it's time to trade, they will remember you.

  4. If you know that they were doing it cause you know their boss, then it wasn't genuine. So that means they would've treated you like **** and gave you a bullshit deal if you didn't know their boss.

  5. It's not necessary. But, If you wanted to, it wouldn't hurt.

I actually sent the finance department at my local dealership a thank you card after they sold me my last car.

I think it would be a great gesture. I know they appreciate it. The salesman who sold it to me(3 years ago) still says hello when he sees me around town.

  6. If I'm happy with my buying experience at a dealership, I just thank them in person.
