Should I separate male when the female is about to have her puppies?

Also I don't know when she got pregnant but shes big now and recently her nipples puffed up a lot and I just felt her ears and they are cold. Could she give birth soon?

I couldn't bring myself to spay or neuter cause I felt bad. Whats done is done so if your gonna post about that then just leave.

Do I have to separate them and for how long?

If I have to keep them away for long I think my only option would be to keep the male at my moms house.

  1. sounds like it will be soon.. you might want to consider a whelpoing box with pig rail.  you can google it (if you want you can google from my blog which is configured for dog searches).

Also I am giving you my cut and paste answer down below for resources that will help even after bithing!

We separate by having a room for the mom , like bathroom or guest room. We set it up for birthing with whelping box, a dressar with supplies or bookshelves with supplies needed as books outline.

WE put a gate in the door way and also shut the door to keep room warmer.

good luck and here is cut and paste

his is my standard answer and meant for information to get resources to you for your dog. Not meant to offend just to save time!

Okay you don't know if dog is in heat, how often, or what to do, or you think your dog is pregnant, when its ready to give birth etc etc etc ?

If you are asking this question you MUST read up and have material on hand and if your dog gives birth.  If you are in time sensitive situation  check your library or local bookstore!

This book is a good one.

YOU NEED to get educated and FAST as pregnancies are only 63 days and it GOES fast.Build a list of three books and go pick them up locally or order from my site which whatever. If your dog is birthing or just given birth it is not to late as the best books deal with care afterwards of mom and pups.

Just get some material to have on hand! Find a mentor in real life someone that has gone through this before.

  2. If the dogs normally get along fine, then I wouldn't worry.  Mommy dog will be very protective of the puppies, and she may let the male know he can't go near them.  Once she shows him she doesn't want him around, then everything should be fine.  When mommy dog is away from pups, you may be surprised that mommy and daddy get along fine.

The normal pregnancy for a dog lasts between 9 and 10 weeks.  So think back to when your female was bred.  The signs she is showing could very well mean she will give birth soon.  She will also look for a hiding place.  You may also see her digging in the yard.  Keep your eye on her.

    Good luck.

  3. -.- when was she last in heat? go from that. Secondly if she hasn't see her vet do so on monday.

You should have had her spayed BECAUSE you don't know what you are doing.

Yes you need to keep them apart once she has the pups unless you want him or her because of him hurting the pups. Keep him away until the pups are about 4 weeks of age

  4. you need to keep her comfortable and have a crate, shes gonna be cranky especially has pups so he doesnt need to bother her she will be very protective. you will know shes due, lose interest in food and water, sleep alot, she will pant and seam uncomfortable, have a temp, and if this is her first litter it may take sometime she may go in labor and not have for a day or so. keep her calm, and stay with her in case she needs help also youll be comforting her. be prepared for her to may have a rough time and make sure she gets the sacks off and theyre breathing or get a warm towel and warm them up and stick fingers in mouth to get junk out if the dont breathe good luck

  5. Yes they should be separated  (they should have actually been kept separated BEFORE she got pregnant, but it sounds too late now).

The male dog could potentially kill the pups.. or he may stress out the new mom and cause her to kill the pups.

Please spay and neuter after the pups are weaned.
