Question:

Should I sign up for med. insurance even though I'm still covered by my mom but not a full time student?

I started a new job that has medical benefits, but I am still covered by my mother's insurance. What are the chances that her insurance will find out that I'm no longer a full-time student and perhaps cut me off? I graduated 7 months ago, but nothing has change with the insurance. I just want to stay with her insurance b/c of dental but I want to make sure I am not going to miss up on an opportunity and end up not being covered at all.

Thanks.

  1. If you are not a full-time student, you are not covered on your mom's insurance. The only reason nothing has changed is because you haven't informed them and they haven't asked if you are still in school. Once they find out, you will not be covered-and chances are, it will go back to the date that you graduated.

Now that you are an adult you need to be pro-active in your life.Get on the coverage at work and notify your mom's insurance that you are no longer a student.

Pay cash for your dental care-a lot of people do.

  2. Depends if you want to make claims and if you go to the doctor often.  If yes then if you make claims on your moms ins. they could deny it if your supposed to be a full time student and worse they could cancel your moms entirely and prosecute for fraud if they think they have been making payment on false claims in the past.  False can mean any little discrepancy with the policy and your situation at that time.  They will spend whatever it takes to not pay even if that amount is more than the claim amount.  They don't like being defrauded.  But in my opinion it is them defrauding us with all the exclusions and limitations and deductibles and depreciation amounts they hit us with.

If you make a claim they will check to see what your student status is currently.  It costs them nothing but a phone call to check and that will be the end of it.

  3. Great so if you get in a car accident and they find out you could have hundreds of thousands of medical bills declined.

    Not smart.

  4. Recently, some policies will continue to insure dependents...even if they are not a full-time student. Your best bet is to call your company directly and explain your situation. You still may be covered. If not, your Mother's premium may reduce and chance are that your rate will not be too high on an individual policy.

Re the dental coverage, separate dental plans are available, but are generally overpriced.

  5. I would get it through your work. Insurance companies are like the Big Brother, always watching! They will find out soon enough and cut you off. And really, if you're now an adult with a job that offers insurance benefits, its time you let mom off the hook and got it yourself.
