Question:

Should I skip my senior year via the CHSPE?

So I just recently found out that I passed the California High School Exit Exam, or CHSPE. It grants me the equivalent of a high school diploma that is good in the state of California. I'm a rising senior in high school and I HATE it here. I already have plans to go to a community college after high school and transfer in one year (because I'll be taking classes during my senior year).

My parents are pushing me to skip my senior year and go straight to a CC because I'm already dead set on transferring, but technically I'd be transferring out in the same time since it'd take two years to transfer from now and one year after high school.

I'm very conflicted right now and I want to make a decision by the end of the week. Part of me wants to leave because I enjoy CC MUCH more than high school, but I might regret later on that I never technically graduated from high school (and won't have senior memories) and it might be embarrassing to tell others.

What do you guys think I should do?

  1. Okay I'm not a senior yet but i definitely think you should stay in for your senior year. So much stuff happens and if you said that you have passed the test so you could get out of school than your classes should just be a breeze. Just my opinion hope it helps. good luck

  2. I skiped my senior year and i talked to the school and they let me graduate with my class  they also added my pic to the yearbook so if thats the only reason for staying there than talk to them about it,,,do you have all your credits you need?

  3. Go to college. The faster you go, the sooner you can start a job.

  4. Hi,

I skipped my senior year of high school. I was already concurrently enrolled in community college and high school my sophmore and junior years so I graduated with a diploma at the end of my junior year. I did not regret it because I couldn't wait to move out and get on with my life. It is actually I think a "selling point" when I apply for jobs to tell potential bosses that I graduated one year early; makes me sound smarter maybe. :)

Would yours actually be a diploma or would it be the equivalent, like a GED? I think diplomas do look better for applying for jobs later, depending on what profession you choose.

Something you may want to consider in this decision- At my community college anyway it was much cheaper to take classes while still in high school than after I graduated. It cost $1 per unit while I was in high school and $33 per unit after I graduated. Big difference! Also, my high school paid for my books while I was in high school, but I don't know if your high school offers that or not.

Another thing to consider- You can only have a certain number of units at a community college that can transfer to a regular college. It may be as high as 75 units, but I don't know for sure. 60 units is a regular 2-year degree, A.S. or A.A. degree, from community college. The community college should be able to tell you.

If you think you may have regrets later, it would be worth it to stay in high school that one extra year. I didn't, but everybody is different. Best of luck! :)
