Should I start Off on a 5'3" Al Merrick Flyer 2?

I have the natural ability to pick things up quickly, but everyone says start off on a bigger board but I dont want to. Should I go for the 5'3" shortboard or is it to much to soon? I live in South FL, so waves never get bigger then 6 ft. It has a swallow tail which should make things easier.

  1. ot's a good board, if your 5'6" and weigh 130 lbs.  don't charge too quick on such a short board, or you'll get frustrated.

  2. You left out one critical detail - your weight.  If you are under 90 lbs, you MAY have a shot.  If not, forget it.  Another important factor is any other wave riding experience like bodyboarding?  One of the toughest things for a new surfer is wave judgement - knowing when to paddle for a wave, when to stand, etc.  Having a bigger board gives more flotation, thus easier to catch waves, another factor to consider when surfing smaller, mushier waves.

So, unless you have Kelly Slater DNA and weigh less than 90 lbs or so, I'd suggest a longer board like a 7'+ hybrid.
