I am thinking about starting a compost pile. Is it easy? Does it smell? Inside or out? Does it need bugs/ worms? What should I include in it? How long does it take to get a garbage bag full of composted stuff ready for the garden?

please answer any you can :) thanks

  1. - It is very easy!

    - Yes, it can smell as it is based on vegetable matter rotting.

    - Definitely OUTSIDE. ;) Get it 20 0r 30 feet from your house/doors/windows if possible.

    - Worms are good, but if it is a healthy compost heap, they will come on their own. You can add enzymes, but this is almost never necessary.

    - Anything that is vegetable or vegetable based. About the only exception I can think of is eggshells. These are ok in your compost. NO MEAT or bones or anything like that. EVER. I would also avoid "manure" from your dog or cat. If you have a bird, you can add the paper from the bottom of the cage. Purists will scream, but it works out pretty well in my experience.

    - Call it 6 mo.s depending on how warm it is where you are.

    - Keep it moist

  2. Composting is fun, but vermiculture is even more fun-- worms eat my garbage-- its awesome.

  3. You should totally make one!  They are easy and fun.  They don't smell much if you do them right.  Worms and other things will grow naturally in them and you should have good stuff for your garden in a matter of weeks.
