Should I start a new career in auto sales in northern california?

it all depends.

how far wil the move be? is it worth it? is this really something that you want to do? will this make your life better or worse? will it amke you happy?

Very little to go on but I would ask you suggest doing a few things.  Have you done Sales before?  Car Sales can be a lucrative field but it unlike many other sales jobs.

Set and very long hours

Seniority will largely effect your actual commission.

Pay is usually a draw based structure on future commission.

You can make money but you will work hard for it and make sure it's not a Hummer or Truck Dealership.

with so few details hard to give a great answer - but i have found when making a a choice i would list all the pros and cons and which every side won was what i would do!!

Keep in mind though..... Because of the economy and gas prices people are buying fewer cars. They also don't want to incur the higher insurance rates associated with a new car.

They are also buying smaller cheaper cars. Meaning less commission for you.

I suppose it all depends on who you want to work for.
