Question:

Should I stick with my straight skis or go parabolic?

I've been skiing for the better part of 15 or so years. I recently (last month) got back into skiing after a 4 year haitus. I have no problem turning, stopping, etc. (seriously, skiing is like riding a bike). I've read reviews saying parabolic skis are best for beginner and intermediate skill levels. I am astounded by the amount of skiers with parabolic skis these days (sometimes I feel like I'm the only one on the mountain with straight skis). Is there really a huge difference in skis? I consider myself fairly advanced as far as my skill level. Would it be advantageous for me to pick up a set of parabolics on sale in the off season?

  1. you know how you said you feel like the only one out there with straight skis? you probably are. parabolics take a little getting used to, but they are more efficient when you use them correctly allowing you to ski better, longer.

  2. There is a very large difference in the two types of equipment.  Shaped skiis are all that are produced any more.  " Parabolic" was a registered type of one manufacturer, shaped is a generic term.  Go to a demo day and try several different sets.  A pair of shaped skiis will put 15 years back in your knees as soon as you put them on.  Try the shaped skiis for the first half of the day then put your own back on.  Be sure to note which pair of the demos you liked the best, size, model and brand, also how they were tuned.

A 1 degree base and 1 degree side bevel is typical, it will make a large difference how it performs.

  3. definantly go parabolic. u gotta get with the age man!
