Should I still use splint boots even though I don't NEED them? At least to protect my horses legs.?

I only do flat work with my horse (english riding) and I'm trying to go over small jumps with her. We have a grass ring so would the splint boots absorb most of the shock?

  1. Splint boots are used to protect the opposite leg from interfering.  If your horse doesn't have that problem then you really don't need splint boots.  You may be thinking of support boots called Sport medicine boots.  They are fitted over the fetlock up almost to the knee and are a kinda shock support. They would be great for jumping to help protect your horse. You can find them in all the catalogs and they are not very expensive anymore and I've had mine for over 10 years.  If you clean them after you ride and keep them dry after cleaning they last forever. They also come in neat colors. Note that they are designed and labeled right and left fronts. You won't need anything in the rear.

The most important thing is that your farrier trims your horse so he is balanced.

  2. they do not asorb shock but they are useful in woods, competiton, or with horses whom over reach to protect their skin and muscles from bruises, cuts, and other injuries. It may be wise to use them when jumping.

  3. Splint boots don't really absorb shock. The protect your horse's legs from their other legs. I would still use them, though. Even when I was just trail riding, I always put boots on my horse. Better to be safe than sorry.
