Been a loyal ATT fan all of my life but they sent me a email the other day saying they were going to double bill me for my long distance. Said they were going to start billing in advance and that next months bill would have 2 months on it. They are making it easy to switch but what do you think? Are the cable internet based phone services any good?

  1. The "broadband phones" such as Vonage certainly seem cheaper (we have Vonage).  The disadvantage is if your cable/internet goes out, so does your phone line.  The advantage is (with Vonage anyway), you get unlimited local and long distance and a lot of extra (and cool) features are included.

We switched first to a package deal with the cable company, and to an internet-based telephone.  After a year, they were charging $44.95 for the telephone with unlimited domestic long distance.  When we switched to Vonage, they took off $10. of the $15. "multiple service discount", so it actually only saved us about $10. a month.

The days of paying for long distance by the minute are over.  Try calling the company and negotiating a deal with them.  If they won't budge, try Vonage or some type of equivalent.  You can get 3 months of Vonage free if you shop around or call them and insist on it.
