Question:

Should I switch from Microsoft Office 2003 to Office 2007?

I use Word and Excel a lot, like several times each day. I rarely use Power Point, mostly just to view things someone sends me. I would keep Outlook 2003, at least at first. I'd use the home and student version of Office 2007.

  1. You would not be missing too much off this program on Excel.  If you are thinking about using Vista the icon are in a different place.  You may have to search a while but I didn't notice too much of a difference on Excel.

  2. I am lovin' 2007 and not looking back.

I switched to Excel first. Excel 2007 was more intuitive than 2003 and allowed me to be more productive right-away.

Regarding Word: the learning is dramatically smoother for newbies, but not quite as smooth as 2003 veterans would like. 2007 does offer a few more options, and I believe its worth the switch.

As I see it, it's not a question of if but when. I'd recommend switching when you have a MAJOR project to do in Word -- one that uses all of its features.

By simply budgeting some extra time to learn Word 2007 -- and working daily -- one can be 100% comfortable with it in less than a week.

As for Outlook, I'd advise against using Outlook altogether -- it's too great of a security risk. On that note, I'd also recommend upgrading to IE7, using it with max security, and only with caution.

I use sandboxIE to protect myself from IE. Sandboxie can also be used with Outlook. Sandboxie is free too.

The best email is server-side. I shift the burden of security to google/the-email-provider, as they are far better equipped to not only worry about security, but do something about it.
