Question:

Should I switch from a western grip to a semi-western?

I've been playing tennis for two years with a western grip. I've heard that a semi-western is better for power and control. So should I switch? And how long does it take to get used to a new grip...b/c I've tried semi-western and it's really awkward.

  1. You could try it out for a month or so, see if you like it. I used to play with a radical western maybe a couple years back, but the semi-western I believe does give you a bit more power, not control. I know high level western gripped players with excellent control.

The semi-western does give you more options though, I find it easier to flatten out a shot using the semi, but I can always get some top spin when I need it. I also like to hit the ball on the up, which seems easier with the semi, though i'm sure its doable with the western.

Just hit with the semi for a couple mnths to get a good feel for it, it requires more of a complete follow through across the body as you'll find out if you try it. I think you'll like it.

  2. stick to what you know best. i use an extreme western grip and i hit the ball with a lot of power and control, usually the more western of a grip you have the more spin you will get but if you dont know what your doing you shouldnt go extremely western because it can lead to the ball going to the net. a semi western can lead to more power but it can aalso lead to the ball going out if you dont know what your doing. but yeah i would justsgick to your western grip if thats what you knw best

  3. Grips are all a matter of getting used to. Which grip to use depends very much on the surface of the courts, your play style, what your opponent likes (or dislikes), the types of shots that he's sending over, and your game plan.

I am sure you've heard all these before but the semi western generally gives you more opportunities to approach the net (quicker grip changes, lower shots to make the opponent hit up etc) while the western grip keeps your opponent way back, reduces hitting the ball into the net and reduces your opponent's possible angle of returns.

    I hope this helps.

  4. yeah

  5. Go to a semi-western especially if you play mosltly on hard courts.

It's just too hard to hit low balls with the western and a good opponent will make you hit them all day.

  6. You could try to learn both and use it. Because when i play, i use all the grips. But, I perfer using extreme western.
