Should I switch to Directv?

I live in New England and my only real concern is bad reception during rain storms, snow storms, and gusting wind. How do the dishes hold up in bad weather? Thanks.

  1. We've had our DirecTV dish up for eight years and only required two service calls.  One was because the original installer did a substandard job putting it up (they now use a different company locally) and the other was because the plastic cup on one of the LNB's broke away.  ON that second visit, the installer said they are making the LNB's stronger now than when we originally bought our dish.

As for rain fade, it does happen, but only in the heaviest rain and storms.  Most times, the TV is out for five minutes or less and comes back without incident.  I can count on one hand the times that low, heavy fog and heavy (1-2 inches per hour) snow have knocked it out for longer periods of time.  Only once can I remember snow temporarily building up on the dish enough to knock it out.  A broom can usually be used to knock the snow off.  However, since our home's main power line is within 12 inches of the dish installation, we prefer to let melting take its course.

Bottom line, don't let cable rhetoric scare you away from satellite.  The fact that one of their "best" shots was to make a commercial accusing DirecTV of hating puppies should tell you everything you need to know about how good of a service DirecTV offers.
