I have been taking lessons for 4 years and do it once a week. I am going to lease a horse in about a week. Should I still take lessons? I know I will need some to remind myself. But is it worth the money? In a way I am like heck ya I will forget everything if I dont but then I am like...ahhh thats extra money.

  1. you should definetley still take lessons. even people that own their own horses take lessons on them. this horse may be harder or different than horses you are used to riding and a good trainer can help you ride to your best ability on that horse. you will also keep getting better, and if you do shows, you need a trainer there. (usually they have to sign entry forms and such)

  2. If you can afford to do that as well as leasing then yes, go for it.

Even if it is less frequent than you are having at the moment, every little helps.

  3. yes, continue with the lessons, how about you any have them every other week, as you are leasing a horse you will probably be riding loads anyway.

  4. Yes.  I'm still taking lessons and I own three horses.  I'm still learning lots and I find it very much worth the money.

  5. You should take lessons on the horse you are leasing, so you still learn, but you get used to your leased horse.

  6. Everyone should take a lesson here and there ... I have been riding for over 30 years ... showed on the "B" Arab shows for years as well as local open and schooling shows .... teach riding now .... and I still take lessons here and there .... I don't think everyone ever knows everything .....

I have a lady who has been riding 3 years .... is leasing and I give her lessons just once a month .... I give her exercises to work on every month ......

And ..... horse is another word for money!  You might as well get use to it now ..... horses eat money ... p**p it, run through it, roll in it, chew on it, you name it ... it cost money!  My Dad's rule now ..... never buy your kid a gift that eats ..... guess what I got for a present when I was 8 years old!?

  7. yes of course you should keep doing lessons. it will excersise the horse (and you) and your horse will rspond and listen to you much more!! i do lessons twice a week but you can still do them ony once a week. just think of how fun it is to get up there on your horse and ride!! hope you and your horse go well!!

    good luck

  8. I love my lessons...look at it this way..your leasing a horse which means you'll be able to ride it more so it is more important to keep yourself in check and make sure you don't get sloppy or start taking your riding and proper horsemanship for granted.  The more you ride without direction..the easier it is to develop bad habits and get sloppy.

Unless you just go trail riding.. (not to diminish leisure riding)...good horsemanship is good horsemanship and everyone...even trainers need ground people at times..it is difficult to see how the horse is performing when your up on them...if you know what I mean.

I don't know if you plan to show or just pleasure ride..but if the additional cost of leasing is putting a strain on you financially..then maybe every other week take a lesson...but I wouldn't stop completely....especially if you plan on riding competitvely.  And, like others mentioned if you are unfamiliar with this new ride...I wouldn't just go off on my own.  I don't think a horse can teach you as much as a human can!!

  9. Definitely take lessons,  it is an investment.  You will really regret it if you don't continue to take lessons.  However, it also depends on what you want to do... if you want to show and move on to higher levels of riding then take lessons.  If you are content with your level now and are not going to show then maybe it is wasteing money.  If you are content with your current level then tell your trainer that and have one last month of lessons, make sure your trainer knows it's your last and ask them to go over the basics with you again just to make sure you are truly ready to go on without lessons.  It depends on your situation,  if lessons really are too much for you for a month to month deal then maybe work it out so you only have maybe two lessons a month or you take one lesson randomly when you feel you need help with something, or you can just take lessons on a whim or maybe every other month.  Talk to your trainer, if they will work with you then you can ask them about other options!  I hope everything works out for you! : )

  10. i would just lease the horse for the time being.....

when i first leased first horse it was right after my riding teacher stopped giving lessons.....

he taught me more than i could ever learn from even the top trainer in the world (he was a world champion at one point in his life so he knew everything)

after a few months if u feel like u need lessons still then take them

    good luck and happy trails

  11. definitely take lessons!

i have been riding for six years and have owned my own horse for 3 of them and have kept taking lessons the entire time...

lessons dont just remind you... they help you keep moving up in your levels of riding...

especially if you're going to show or if you jump... lessons are the best thing to do... you get to learn new things or jump higher or find things that you need to practice on...

hope you have fun with your horse!

  12. to get the full benifit then yes you should continue to take lessons. yes its extra $$$ but its always worth it!

  13. Definitely, not only is it a great refresher, if you run into any issues with your horse or want to teach him/her to do a certain thing (Say you'd like to try jumping for example), your instructor can answer any questions you may have and help you get started. They are definitely worth the money- everyone needs a lesson every once in a while, no matter how long they have been riding!

  14. you should still take lessons because this horse could be different than the horse you ride for lessons, you might need help working with him, it would be really nice if you could take lessons on him so when you work with him you will have a teacher there

  15. I've taken lessons on and off for 50 years and when money is tight, I work on what I know...when I have some to play with, I bring in a trainer.  At this point, I focus more on new and improved training techniques than on my riding....but you should keep your mind open and your skills advancing as much as you can afford to.  If you can't afford lessons, use the resouces available to read and study anything you can benefit from.  There is plenty you can work on if you already have 4 years of lessons.  You won't forget how to ride, and you can read to brush up on anything else.

  16. yes to get used to your horse,

then after a while maybe do a leson every 2 weeks

    GOOD LUCK

  17. Yes, you should continue lessons. An instructor helping you will make it easier for you to get to know and to enjoy riding the horse you are leasing. You are never done learning when it comes to horses and riding.

  18. Yes because then you'll be so good you can maybe BUY that horse one day instead of an expensive lesson each week.
