Question:

Should I take an Air Conditioner from the basement?

I live in an apartment complex in Chicago's Wrigleyville. It's been hotter than the River Styx lately and I happened to notice 3 window unit air conditioners sitting in the basement. In a related story, in our backyard area, there are a number of grills that have been left by previous tenants and have become sort of communal-use grills.

Is it safe to assume that these air conditioners, still not in use this late into the summer, have been orphaned and are safe to adopt for my own personal use?

  1. Hello, Chicago!  My husband from Melrose Park says yes, take them.  Communal or not, they are not being used.  keep cool.

  2. could be................

  3. It is possible but considering with the heat as you say is really bad, they could have malfunctioned. It would be a wise decision to have them checked first by an electrician to make sure they are safe and avoid a potential disaster.

  4. If they been there for any length of time and no one appears to own them, them borrow one or two.  If anyone every asks about them, tell them that you thought that they were abandoned and gladly offer to return them.

  5. I imagine used air conditioners not being used are likely not functioning.

Easiest to use without worrying about dropping it out the window would be a portable AC with 1 or 2 dryer like hoses that go to a window.  You don't even have to take the screen off of the window.  I use one of those on my 2nd floor in Elgin, because the window AC sort of glued in over a window failed a year after I bought my home and does not have a slide out chassis.
