Should I take anti-malaria meds before going to maya tulum,mexico?

I have a prescription but heard so many bad stories about the meds. being harmful to the body.

No i travel there on business every few months.  I have been going there the last 9 years never had a problem.

You don't need to take those meds.... Tulum isn't in the middle of nowhere, it's close to Cancun and Playa del Carmen, which are perfectly civilized places. You would only spend a few hours in the actual ruins of Tulum, which are next to the jungle and the beach, anyway..... so you should be fine.

What?  why?  No one needs to take anti-malaria pills for Mexico.
