  1. lessons are helpful. I think you should take a lesson if you can't learn or have difficulty learning on your own. Because sometimes learning on your own, you will not learn everything you need to know. it is still good to get help once in a while.

  2. I think so -- and I'm self taught.

But I think I would have learned a lot faster and gotten farther with the guitar if I'd had lessons from a good teacher who taught the kind of music I wanted to learn.

I was 12 when I started on guitar thanks to my parents, and I did have a teacher for the first couple of months -- but I didn't really like him or the kind of music he was starting me off with (we were using a Mel Bay instruction book written in, like 1932).  So I didn't practice, and after awhile he dropped me as a student.  I eventually ended up teaching myself to play out of books, but it took years, and many dead ends and lack of direction, before I actually became a halfway decent acoustic guitarist.

If you have the chance, take lessons with someone who will teach you to play the kind of music you like and want to learn.

  3. i suggest you take because in having guitar lessons you'd really learn a lot of things even things that you didn't know existed. Compared to self teaching you wont know what you need to know and your pace would be stagnant. When I started playing guitar i had lessons and when i felt i was good enough i stopped, and then after a few years i realized that people around was becoming better and better and i was the only one who wasn't improving i realized that it was because i wasn't learning new things anymore and because of this i went back to taking lessons.

  4. I started guitar by teaching myself.  But then I started lessons and I learned so much faster with lessons!  So definitely take lessons, you'll learn a lot more a lot quicker!

  5. well, i tried self teaching myself on the drums and it didn't really work. my mom bought me a set for christmas and told me she couldn't take me to lessons because of gas. then i bought a $10 book on how to teach yourself. that didn't work at all. i tried and tried but it didn't make any sense. now, I'm finally going to go to my first drum lesson tomorrow! i would take guitar lessons. If at all possible, see if you can get a teacher to come to your house or something like that. that's what i did for piano and it worked awesomely!

  6. YES I am being taught buy a tutor and it is helping me so much.

My Friend and I started giutar at the same time but she didn't want to be taught by a tutor and I did as from then on she has been struggling with giutar so much she is still on the basic chords. Quiet recently she took my advice to start the giutar with a tutor and it is helping her so much!

  7. YES!!! Without a doubt lessons are your BEST bet at getting anywhere with an instrument. You can get somewhere with teaching yourself, but nothing can compare to having an actual person who knows the instrument/music inside and out by your side.

Lessons aren't cheap...and finding a good teacher is a bit hard. Believe me: I've gone through two guitar teachers before landing the one I have now-and he's much better than the other two. I'm happy. And you will be too.
