Should I take my puppy to work with me?

I work at night, and I am getting a new puppy. And this may sound crazy but I want to take my puppy to work at night and let it sleep in his crate in my mini-van ( puppy will be warm and I can go out there whenever I want to, to check on him) So I can take him out to go potty until he is potty trained.

  1. I used to work at night and I was able to bring my dog.  It was great for the dog (and of course for me) and because I worked with kids, if one of them woke up at night, many of them felt safer seeing a dog on the premises.  I wholeheartedly agree with all the answerers who suggested you try to bring your puppy inside with you.  I also understand some people don't like dogs and will make life difficult for you just because you have a dog there, puppy or adult.  And some people are legitimately allergic or afraid.  As for crate training, I am all for it.  I train service dogs and I would never try to raise a dog without a crate,  In their adult life, all my dogs have loved their crates and I always leave one available to them.  That said, if your van is comfortable and secure and you will be able to go out to him regularly, say every 3 or 4 hours, then you should be able to do it.  Of course if you have nobody at home that will be able to let him out, then being available to him every so many hours will be better than having to leave him in the crate in the house for up to nine hours at a stretch.  You will have to use your own judgement and it looks like you are doing that by posting and asking for opinions.  Maybe a thermometer in the van will help you to know how hot it really is.  And then what about winter?  Will you have to make other arrangements for him?  Will you be able to make other arrangements for him?  Are you figuring he will be old enough by that time to wait in the crate for you while you are at work?  Personally, regarding crate training, if your dog has an opportunity to chew the leg off your table without being told he shouldn't do it, he will only learn that he should not do certain things while you are around.  Ifhe is always supervised while not in the crate, he will not learn that it is OK to do things you do not want him to do.  Potty training (for me, at least) is the last reason for crate training.  As a service dog trainer, I have to train my dogs to eliminate with a command (or hand signal if they are intended to go to a deaf person).

  2. is there any way you can bring the kennel inside.

i only asked because my office has a kennel and we both have brought our puppies up here. and it helps wih socializing

  3. Um, no.

A dog closed up in a car is dangerous and deadly for the dog.

  4. i no u really love ur puppy and want to be close to it but, keeping it in a crate in the back of a mini van??? No way just let him in while u go to work maybe get a doggie door that a way u won't have poo and pee all over the house.

    : )

  5. I don't see any problem with doing this.

Make sure the van is always locked up.

  6. If it is a new dog I wouldn't leave him in a crate for long periods of time. Even if you do check on him.... Its just not right

  7. It is not wise to lock a dog in a car. It is dangerous. You can take the crate, and put it by your desk/work area, if they allow you to do so. But, do not leave the dog in the car. Otherwise, please leave it at home. It will be fine at home for a few hours. If you have anyone else living in your house, tell them to take the puppy out, after a few hours of being locked up! Then praise and reward him, and let him out when you get back in the morning!!

Good Luck with the new puppy!

  8. yh there is no problem in that but make sure your van don't get over heated since most dogs die from the heat wave ...bring  2 bowls with you and a couple of bottle of water and some puppy food your pup will b fine ...i have done it once or twice when my dogs was pups .... but don't leave him in there too long  see if he can actually come inside with you first....

  9. I agree with Austin E....it just doesn't seem right to leave one in the car all day...

  10. if your boos says yes then take it

  11. My gut tells me to never leave an animal in a car for a prolonged period of time unattended.

Ask your boss if you can bring him inside.

  12. i say go for it.

  13. NO, If you have to crate it, give your puppy to a new home. Thats just cruel. If I found out you left a dog crated in your car, believe me I would call the police and animal control

  14. you can crate the dog...BUT not in the car...

it can be dangerous and deadly

also crating for more than the dogs years/months is a bad thing as well

you can only crate a dog for as many months/years that the dog is plus 1

so if your dog is 3 months old you can only crate the dog for 3 hrs + 1 = 4 hours minimum

i would reconsider getting a dog until you have the time for a dog
