Should I take singing classes?

Ok.. Now, I'm a very talented piano player that plays piano for my church and hopefully for my college pretty soon.. This really talented music professor like s my style of music, and he suggests for me to play for my college and to sing in Chorale. But when I talked it over on the phone with my parents, they said no, I'm not a singer and just a piano player. But I really want to try singing lessons even thought he might be right, I mean, I could both sing and play the piano. What do you guys think? should I just go ahead and just stick with piano even though my parents might be right?

  1. Here's the thing; anyone can improve their singing with lessons/classes. You just have to have the commitment and passion to want to improve and really learn. If you have that then you are already half way there.

A vocal coach will teach you the correct placement and show you how to use your voice properly - breath, support, control etc. If you practice and really commit to it then your quality and tone and range will improve.

You already have the musical knowledge so its any easier transition. You wont have to learn theory and music - you will just have to learn singing technique and the application of it.

I say go for it. What can you lose? More musical knowledge? A better grounding for college? Good luck.

  2. yes you should sing

if your a musician already you SHOULD already know how to read sheet music as well, which is a great advantage

the fact that you play the piano means you can hear the notes

and take a wild chance your folks cant tell you what to do forever

  3. if you  are truly set on singing and pianoing do it!

but if you are not there's no use in needlessly annoying your parents...

But i think you should... even though I don't know ur situation...

  4. If you major in music in college (piano), you will have to vocalize (sing) a certain amount in class.  In addition, at my university even instrumentalists have to sing in the chorus for 2 semesters.

Try it!  Sing!  What could be wrong with giving it a try!
