Question:

Should I take the premed classes?

I'm a freshman in college, and I'm considering getting a future career in medicine. However, I'm not exactly 100% sure that that's what I'm going to decide to go med school in the end. Should I take the pre-med classes just in case I ultimately decide to? Or is that a waste?

  1. Education is never really a waste when you learn something. I also thought about taking pre-med classes. I so far have chose not to. Who knows though, maybe you will enjoy it.

  2. Hey i'm about to enter my second year of college and i went through the same thing in my freshman year. I actually did take some pre-med classes because i wasn't sure either (and i'm still not). I think i may go for it so I'm happy i took the classes. You should definitely take some pre-med classes.

Here's how it works (although you may know it already): Whatever your major is, you're most likely going to be required to take math and science courses. So, why not take chemistry or bio 1 and pre-calc or calc in your first semester? They go towards fulfilling pre-med requirements and they should also go towards your major.

This way, even if you decide not to be pre-med in the end, you won't be behind. You should also definitely take pre-requisite classes your first year so you have time to think. (Also, work with an advisor or counselor at school to pick the right classes so you won't be behind. I spent a lot of time with my advisor picking classes and it really helped me out.) And remember: just because you buy yourself some extra time during the first one or two semesters, it doesn't mean you can waste it! Do research and talk to people about becoming a doctor. Maybe you could talk to doctors that you know or maybe you could shadow a doctor. (Yahoo! answers is mad helpful too lol). Also, even though you may know this, I'll say it anyway - Grades are extremely important to get into med school so do the best you can, even though you're not sure you want to be pre-med!! Good luck on your decision and I hope you make the wise one!

Also, "don't become a doctor for the money" is what I've heard. If you decide to do it, please be a well-intentioned, honest doctor. Just thought I'd throw that in there =]
