Question:

Should I take the responsibility?

I'm doing a school project and the leader in my group wants me to be the mainspeaker of the group. But I'm a terrible public speaker, I get nervous and never think clearly and say the right things. It has happened many times before. I want a strong speaker to present so I kinda persuaded other people to agree on the leader doing the presentation. He agreed but then he text messaged me, saying he can't do it cuz he'll get nervous... I'd like to contribute to the group but I think I'll mess the speech up (I do it all the time)

Now I don't know if I should take the responsibility since the leader wants me to help him out.

  1. I've been there and I know exactly how you feel. I just got very organzed, wrote an outline (using a large font) so I wouldn't get lost, also I would write comments on the margins to remind me to look at the audience on the left, on the right, the teacher, smile and so on. To aleviate my nerves I would pretend that I am looking at everyone in the  class but instead of looking at everybodys faces  I would look at their heads, this work for me. Make sure you ask the group  at first if they can all hear you, and adjust your voice so that everyone can hear you. And make sure you know your material well, practice in front of a mirror several times. I'm telling you, I hated presentations but know I'm glad I went through that cause I often have to make presentations and I don't feel nervous when I am well prepared. Good luck!

  2. See.........no one is like no one. U r different from others......other hand..... others r different from you. U may b a terrible public speaker......but it is not what you are; it's just you think like that. No one carries that courage for public speaking from his birth. It's a quality to be developed. U should start increasing your quality of speaking public rather than hesitating to do it. What the most important is that........now a days, in every kind of career an individual is tested by his public speak.

So buddy, you should take the responsibillity.

  3. You should do it! It will definetly help you get over that fear.

  4. If the leader gets nervous and you get nervous, that leaves it up to other members of the group.  Talk with the rest of them to find out who is the least nervous about public speaking.  If the group can't reach a decision, then draw straws.

You may want to consider talking to someone who is familiar with public speaking, such as a speech teacher.  They might be able to give you tips on speaking in public that will make it less stressful.
