Question:

Should I talk to my doctor about this?

Here lately I have been experiencing short term moments of lightheadedness. It is usually when I stand up everything goes blank for about 5-10 seconds. It doesn't happen often and I never faint but I still think I should bring this to my mother and doctor. What could the problem be? I eat a very healthy diet and I try to eat from 1,000-2,000 calories a day. I also exercises and get lightheadedness sometimes. But back to the question, because it doesn't happen very often should I leave it alone and see if it gets worse or should I notify my doctor and family.

  1. well, it could be that you aren't getting enough sugar in your blood every day, but you said you try and eat from 1,000 to 2,000 calories a day which is good. but i would say notify your doctor and family, because you don't have any idea what it is, and it could escalate into something worse. so get checked out by the doctor! Hope i was helpful!

  2. You should talk with your Dr about it, it sounds like you have orthostatic hypotension= that means that when you stand the blood pressure drops. It can be caused by a lot of things. It can be caused by dehydration, not getting enough fluids, syncope- where the heart does not beat strong enough the blood pressure drops. You could have hypoglycemia- a drop in blood sugars. But a consult with your doctor could rule the more dangerous things out.  In the mean time until you see your doctor, keep a journal of when it happens, how long the episode last, what you were doing just prior to the incident, what you had to eat or drink for 8 hours before the incident, and if possible what your blood sugar levels are when it happens.Good Luck.

  3. i don't know what it could be you seem really healthy but if i were you i would go to the doctors just to be safe.

  4. Well, sometimes people who don't eat enough or don't get enough iron have this problem to a more severe degree.

But that happens to a lot of people. If you've been sitting for an extended period of time and then you stand up, the blood in your body shifts around quickly, away from your head because of gravity until your body counterbalances it.

Now it sounds like your body, with its 5-10 second reaction time is reacting a bit slower than most. Try to get at least 1200 calories a day- that's the lowest you can maintain for any period of time safely.

I don't think you should really need to see a doctor unless it progresses to fainting. Then you should see a doctor.
