  1. Yes and no. A good tip would be about 10 bucks, but 5 will suffice.

  2. As a federal employee, he can't take a gift; however, you can offer him a bottle of water or a soft drink to drink when he is on his route or call the post office manager and tell him what a great job the guy is doing.  I'm sure praise is almost non-existent in that environment.

  3. US Postal Service employees cannot accept tips, but a letter to his supervisor saying how much you appreciated his efforts on your behalf would be great! It will go in his personnel file and used in consideration for job advancements.

  4. my dad tried giving the mailman a card with money in it for Christmas and he said he wasnt aloud to take it?

    but yeah thats nice

  5. Gift card, yes...tip, no.

  6. Nice idea but, it IS their job. No tip.

  7. The technical rule is that USPS employees cannot accept gifts in cash or which have a value of more than $20.  Some offices enforce this more stringently than others. Gift cards, cookies, and letters of commendation though are all extraordinarily appreciated so don't think your carrier is being difficult.  Its just a matter of trying to keep out of trouble while taking care of our favorite people, the customers.

  8. I've tried to tip our mail person on several occasions and he always tells me he isn't allowed to accept it.  So, I make him homemade goodies like New Orleans pralines, chocolate carmel turtles, peanut butter cups, etc. and give them to him once a year at the holidays with a card expressing my gratitude.  He takes them every year...so they must be allowed to receive some kinds of gifts.
