  1. Sure we'll show you around and you can stay with us at Ballydung.

All you have to do in return is make the bit of dinner clean the bathroom ( not a nice place after Rodge is finished with it ) and milk the cows..................

  2. Alan M are you so ignorant as to not realise the Unionist terrorist activities that happened as well. My great grandfather was kidnapped by the IRA but you know something they weren't the only ones. I live in the Republic as an Irish Protestant with an English mother and I love the people down here it's the morons up north who can't just learn to live together that are scum be they Republican or Unionist. You are ignorant about human nature, Irish history and British history so do the world a favour and knock it off.

To answer the question you should be fine as long as you take basic precautions most places are safe enoough and you can tell quite easily if the area isn't just by looking around.

  3. Well none of these answers appear to be from Irish people.  I can't believe the one which said it wasn't safe to walk into a shop, not sure where he lives but he's way out of order even if referring to the north.

Our country is a very safe one.  Of course just as anywhere you need to be careful.  Don't go off with a strange guy on your own. If staying in hostels be careful of your belongings.  Drink in moderation so if you are in a pub at night you always have your wits about you!

We love visitors. People everywhere will be very happy to chat to you.  We have quite a lot of immigrants now who do not speak such good english always, so if the first person you try doesn't work give it another go!

Just be street smart and you will be fine.  We have lots to offer and as I said we are very friendly. Welcome and enjoy.

  4. I don't see why it should be a problem, it is a very nice and relatively safe country overall. People are friendly. I have a few friends who have travelled there alone and they were fine, had a good time.

My advice is to really see as much of the country as possible - don't just do the tourist areas and the bars. Read up on the history before you go - it will add to your journey. Have fun!

It is expensive though - save up!

  5. Ireland is a safe country. Obviously, travelling alone anywhere has its risks, but you shouldn't have any problems, really. The Irish are very welcoming, and there's no shortage of other tourists/travellers like yourself to meet, particularly during the summer. Enjoy!

  6. Alan M: The IRA never attacked anyone in the Republic of Ireland. That was done by the Unionist extremists, sadly.

Apologies to the asker for the above. I would advise using commonsense. Every place is safe if you take precautions. Mind your money, your belongings, don't accept drink from strangers, don't walk out alone at night, and don't exchange money in the streets.

If you have relatives in Ireland, contact them because it's good to have some kind of base there, especially as you will be far from home.

  7. I am from the US and lived in Ireland for several years after high school.  It is a safe country and the people are extremely helpful and friendly.  So if you plan to travel alone you will have no problem.  There are numerous castle ruins and plenty of things to do.  You will not be bored.  Good luck and have a great time.

  8. Its fine at the moment. The IRA have given up their murder campaign in the north,  killing anyone in sight, so now both sides in the island , British and Irish, can walk the streets more safely now.

You are travelling at a good time. A few years ago just walking into a shop in the north was dangerous. You never knew if the IRA had planted another bomb there to blow anyone inside shopping up.

Orla C. You are right. The IRA never attacked the south. Only the British in the north who were legally there and wanted by the people. They only bombed them daily. Excuse Orla. I think she was too young to understand.
