Question:

Should I treat my horses water?

We have to use the local irrigation water, not the city house water, for our horses drinking troughs. This is not well water but local surface water from aqueducts that come down from the Sierra's here in California. Should I try to find a filter for their water or do you think it is OK for them to drink. The previous owners said it was fine for their horses.

  1. I would definitely have a sample tested to be safe.  Surface water should be okay for horses, but if there is fertilizer run off of chemicals then you would need to sort out some other source to water your guys.

  2. Your local water authority or water engineer can test the water for you and tell you how safe it is.

  3. You can contact your local irrigation district for the advisability of drinking for your horses.  I'm certain that it is OK, since it's what is used for the cattle in the area.
