Question:

Should I trust the dentists in Mexico?

I have a lot of dental work I would like to get done and here in Mexico I've noticed that it is a lot cheaper than in the States. I shouldn't base my opinion on looks alone but I've saw many offices here and they don't look very um....professional to say the least. Should I get my teeth fixed here in Mexico or should I go ahead and pay more to do it in the States with a dentist I trust?

  1. I recommend trying to get a referral from someone who has used a dentist in Mexico before you go. Some of them aren't very good, and some are very expensive.  I'm planning to go myself in a few months, and I have a referral from a friend.  I hear that the Washington Dental Clinic is very good.  They have a car that will pick you up and drop you off at at the border.

  2. Pues yo creo k solo los caros qui en Mexico son los buenos, en EUA an de ser mejor, si estas dispuesta a pagar un dineral para q t los arraglen aqui, adelante

  3. Hi,

Of course, anyone who works in the United States Dental industry and has never set foot on Mexican soil will have horror stories to tell about the terrible state of dental-ness in Mexico.

As an expat living in Cuernavaca, Mexico for the last 2 years, and on top of that being an irresponsible and poverty-stricken resident of the US for 38 years prior who entered Mexico with 18 cavities and a rotten tooth, I feel qualified to advise that the horror stories are pure rubbish.

I had the tooth pulled and all 18 cavities fixed, plus 2 wisdom teeth extracted, by the most professional, skilled (and fluent English speaking!) dentist I've ever encountered (I've seen MUCH worse in the US). Cost me about the same as a years worth of decent dental insurance premiums in the States.

Like anything else, if you cross the boarder just looking to save a buck, you're gonna end up in an inferior dental office.

  4. I recently had work done in Mexico.  4 cavities were filled, in 4 seperate locations in my mouth.  Top-right, Top-left, Bottom-right and Bottom-left.  I like to spread it out.

At any rate, it was incredibly scary, borderline horrifying.  Within seconds of sitting down, they had a drill in my mouth, drilling.  No novocaine or other pain killers, just sit and drill.  I don't know that I've ever been more tense than I was for those 20 minutes.  d**n near pulled all the muscles in my back!

Aside from the "foreign" nature of the experience, and the lack of pain killer, they were very fast, surprisingly gentle, there was never any pain and the work was exactly what was needed!  I'd do it again!

  5.   I have a dentist here in the states and I visit a friend who happens to be a dentist in Bucerias, Mexico each year.   If I have a problem I make an appointment and have in the past.  He studied in the states and chose to return to his home to practice.   I spend at least a couple months a year in Mexico and know a number of people who have used dental services in Mexico from teeth whitening to Implants with excellent results.   I think you need to do your home work, ask questions, just like you would back home.  In the end follow your instincts but I would spend your money in Mexico rather than finance your work in the states..

  6. See if there are any Yahoo Groups or message boards for the city you are in. Ask for personal recommendations. There are many excellent Dentists in Mexico, many are US trained and have all the latest equipment.

  7. Interesting you asked. I seen an article on dateline or some television nightly news program and they were talking about this. I would say YES, go ahead and go for it. Yes, it doesn't look as professional as the States, but the quality of the dentists are just as good as here. I would go ahead and go for it, but it's up to you if you think you would feel safer then just have it here. Good Luck!

  8. I worked in a dental office for 4 years. Quite a few of our patients went to Mexico because it was a lot cheaper. Most of them came to us to have the work they had done in Mexico fixed. Mostly crowns and bridges. If you do go to Mexico to have work done, make sure it's a respectable place with a doctor who is professional. If you are in the seat and see something that doesn't look right you can always leave.

    Good luck!

  9. yes, why dont ppl think its not safe. they get their material from the USA they learn from the US wtf  everyone wants and learns from the U.S. just dont do it in a shady place i suggest Mexico City
