Question:

Should I try and hold my pencil correctly?

I've been holding my pencil incorrectly for as long as I can remember without realizing it.

Now, when I try to hold it the right way it feels so unnatural and I can't write or sketch well. Should I just keep on holding it the wrong way or try and get used to holding it correctly?

  1. Yes. You should get used to holding it that way.

  2. do what you like.

everyone tells me that i have great handwrittin and i don't hold mine right. so i don't think its a big deal lol.

if it feels unnatural don't do it.

  3. There is no right or wrong way.  There is what is generally accepted as right or wrong.  Its all up to you.  If the way you hold it works, then hold it.  That just makes you more unique for who you are.

  4. I have the same problem.

People tell me that if I hold it properly then in the long run, I will write more neatly and correctly and it will help with my drawing and posture, but it's just so much easier to hold it the other way.

A little while ago, (couple of years,) I begun to train myself to hold it the right way, nearly gave up, but then completely forgot that I was trying to change my habit.

    I remembered a couple of months later...lol.

It's really up to you what you choose to do.

(Good luck if you try to change.)

  5. Continue holding in normal-for-you manner or drawing and for sketching.  It's not broke, don't try to fix it.

Get a completely different implement for writing and begin a-new writing with it.  I don't write the same way with a fiber-tip'd pen as I do with a ballpoint pen as I do with a chisel-cut steel-nib'd pen or a feather quill.  Choose a new tool that will require what you've been told is the "correct" method for a pencil.  When you've mastered with the new tool, you can transfer the skill back to pencil-writing, when you're ready.

Unless you're a professional calligrapher, beautiful writing isn't that important.  It's usually more of matter of folk being able to easily read what's been written.

  6. who cares. i hold mine the wrong way too. i write just fine. join the club

  7. kepp it the way u hold it i dont hold my pencil right and im the best drawer in ma class ima fashion designer and i think if i try to change my handwriting thr magic will o away deff keep it

  8. Hold it the wrong way.  If you switch, you're going to have to relearn how to write.  And sketch.  Think of all the time you'll have wasted.

  9. Well it doesn't sound like its affecting you so I would just keep n holding your pencil the same way!

  10. hold it the wrong way. As long as it works for you. Soon everyone will only use computers for writing anyway. Plus, I, along with most people I know type incorrectly, but as long as it works.

Who knows you might be able to get better at drawing and writing then people holding the pencil 'normally'.

  11. keep holding it the wrong way, it's fine and it's what you are used to

at school when i am writing people always comment on the way i hold my pencil asking "how can you write like that?" it just works for me, so do whatever you are used to

  12. who cares, if its comfortable to you then it shouldnt matter

  13. just keep on holding it the wrong way. i hold my pencil the wrong way, and although some of my friends laugh at me, no one takes that much of a notice.

  14. do whatever feels comfortable your the one that has to write with it ; i don't hold my pencil correctly either.

  15. use the special correction grips that force you to hols it in that way . my friend used to have a funny grip, everytime she did it i would tell her to stop and she started writing normally within a few weeks . correction grips at any office supply store
